The PS2 version of The Warriors from Take-Two Interactive moved up one notch to become the top-rented videogame in the U.S., according to Rentrak’s preliminary Home Video Essentials data for the week ended Oct. 30. The title earned an additional $270,000 in rentals during its 2nd week. The Xbox version moved up one to #4 in its 2nd week, earning $230,000. It was the only SKU in the top 10 not for PS2. Electronic Arts (EA), Midway Games and Sony Computer Entertainment each had 2 SKUs in the top 10 also. EA’s were Madden NFL 06 at #2 (down one in its 12th week, $260,000) and NCAA Football 06 at #7 (down one in its 16th week, $190,000). Midway’s were Blitz: The League at #5 (up 3 in its 2nd week, $220,000) and Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks at #9 again in its 7th week ($180,000). Sony’s were Socom 3: U.S. Navy SEALs at #6 (down 3 in its 3rd week, $190,000) and Shadow of the Colossus at #10 (up 24 in its 2nd week, $160,000). Rounding out the top 10 were Activision’s Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland at #3 (up 4 in its 2nd week, $260,000) and Atari’s Dragon Ball Z Budokai: Tenkaichi at #8 (up 18 in its 2nd week, $180,000).
Toshiba is cutting 279 jobs at its Lebanon, Tenn., TV assembly plant as it drops CRT-based rear projection sets in joining a stampede of companies leaving the category. Sony halted CRT-based rear projection TV manufacturing at its New Stanton, Pa., plant in the spring, while LG Electronics said this week it also would cease sales to focus on flat panel and microdisplay sets.
In a win for Bells and FCC Chmn. Martin, the Commission opened what officials called a “broad” inquiry into its power to ensure municipalities fairly award broadband franchises. Unveiling a proposed rulemaking on local franchise authority (LFA) obligations, FCC staff said they “tentatively” found the Communications Act allows Commission oversight in this area.
The CPB Wed. defended discussing in closed session an inspector gen.’s report on the Tomlinson investigation and withholding the report from immediate release. “Premature” release of information may be “harmful to the corporation’s interest,” CPB said. The board, whose reviewing of the report began Tues., has drawn fire from media groups for closing the sessions to the press and the public.
