The PS2 version of Madden NFL 06 from Electronic Arts (EA) was again the best-selling videogame in the U.S., according to Rentrak’s preliminary Home Video Essentials data for the week ended Oct. 2. Rentrak said the SKU earned an additional $350,000 in its 8th week. The Xbox version of the game was again #4 ($200,000). EA, which dominated the top 10, had 5 other SKUs in the chart: Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects for PS2 at #3 (up 6 in its 2nd week, $210,000), NCAA Football 06 for PS2 at #5 (down 3 in its 8th week, $200,000), NBA Live 06 at #7 in its first week ($180,000), Xbox Marvel at #8 (up 5, $180,000) and Burnout Revenge for PS2 at #9 (down 6 in its 3rd week, $160,000). Rounding out the top 10 were the PS2 and Xbox versions of Midway’s Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks at #2 (up 3, $230,000) and #6 (up one, $190,00), respectively, in its 2nd week, and Take-Two Interactive’s Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition for PS2 at #10 (down 2 in its 25th week, $150,000). Separately, Rentrak said U.S. consumer rental spending during the 3rd quarter ended Oct. 2 fell 11% from the comparable period in 2004. It said consumers decreased their spending on “a la carte” and subscription DVD and VHS rentals from the brick-and-mortar and online channels by more than $218 million during the period. Rentrak Business Development Vp Brad Hackley said “the video rental market is experiencing a temporary slump due to a slowdown in the flow of compelling content, plus the summer season [has] been traditionally lighter as compared to other quarters.” He said “the implementation of new video store and online subscription models has also been a contributing factor.” Rentrak said consumer rental spending reached $1.75 billion during the quarter, in which Oscar winner Million Dollar Baby was the #1-rented theatrical video and Lost: The Complete First Season was the top-rented TV DVD. It also said Warner Home Video had the largest market share but didn’t specify what the company’s share was.
