A federal judge tripled damages awarded Omega Patents, to $1.8 million, following a jury finding that Directed Electronics and 2 other companies infringed its patents. U.S. Dist. Court Judge Anne Conway, Orlando, also granted Omega’s request for attorneys fees and grant a preliminary injunction barring Directed from selling products containing the infringing technology, Directed said. The patents applied to data communications bus devices that include interfaces for remotely controlling some motor vehicle functions. Directed said its sales of products containing the technology were $2.9 million in 2006, less than 1% of its total revenue. Omega sued Fortin Audio Radio and Importel in 2004, and Directed was added a year later. Trial began in Jan. and Omega won a $600,000 jury award Feb. 12, Directed said.

The Department of Commerce (Commerce) has announced its preliminary decision to apply U.S. anti-subsidy law to imports from China. According to Commerce, the decision alters a 23-year policy of not applying the CV duty law to non-market economy (NME) countries, and reflects China's economic development.
Globalstar hired Alcatel Alenia Space to upgrade its operations and control center in Milpitas, Cal. and a backup ground control facility in El Dorado Hills, Cal., Globalstar said. The contract is worth $12 million. Alcatel Alenia Space is building Globalstar’s 2nd generation constellation, said Globalstar. With this upgrade, Globalstar customers should expect satellite voice and data services until at least 2025, it said. Preliminary upgrades should be done by the end of 2008, said Globalstar CEO Jay Monroe. Globalstar will be able to monitor and control a “mixed constellation of first and 2nd generation satellites” starting in early 2009, Monroe said. With the upgrades, Globalstar will be able to conduct 2nd generation support and control “with minimal staffing and maximum task automation,” it said.
