Austrian ENUM Forum Vp Michael Haberler said Fri. there was no need for more trials for ENUM. The technology of phone numbers registered as domains in the DNS e.164.arpa and routed between the public switched network and IP networks is ready for deployment, he said at a Zurich conference of the 3 German registries Switch, Nic.at and Denic. Nic.at now is expected to start commercial deployment as soon as the Austrian regulator delegates the zone to the registry at least on a preliminary basis. Haberler said Nic.at was targeting the 2nd quarter of this year. What made the plan for the commercial phase more exciting was that with a new numbering plan to be designed by the Austrian regulatory body, ENUM would get special, not geographically limited, numbers 0043 780 that could be offered to customers not just in Austria. Similarly, the German regulatory authority proposed 0049 32 as numbering space for Internet telephony and thereby ENUM. Traditional ISPs still were anxious about entering the telephone business, Haberler said.
