The mayor of Chicago told the Chicago Sun Times July 22 that she asked Marriott if the CBP Trade Symposium could be moved out of Chicago. “When it became clear that Marriott was unable to accommodate our demand, I mobilized city resources to facilitate the peaceful protest against the conference, ensure the protection of First Amendment rights and to safeguard all guests and visitors on the McCormick Place campus," Mayor Lori Lightfoot said. A rally staged by immigrant rights groups was held outside the conference hotel at 11:30 a.m. local time July 23, ahead of when Department of Homeland Security Acting Director Kevin McAleenan was scheduled to give a luncheon keynote address.

Almost 800 hair brushes from China -- which had been listed on the shipment's manifest as hookahs, hats and gloves -- were inspected by CBP at the Port of Baltimore in late May and detained for further inspection by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which then conducted a chemical analysis to determine the lead content. The brushes ultimately will be destroyed, because the coatings on them were found to have about 25 times the lead content that is safe for children, by U.S. regulations. The brightly colored folding hair brushes that came with mirrors would have retailed for about $7 each, CBP said in a July 19 press release. The shipment was headed for a Baltimore suburb.
CBP created Harmonized System Update (HSU) 1913 on July 21, containing 113 Automated Broker Interface records and 23 Harmonized Tariff Schedule record, it said in a CSMS message. The update includes adjustments required by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative's announcement of new exemptions from Section 301 tariffs on China (see 1907080008). Modifications required by the verification of the 2019 HTS are included as well.
