Without revealing numbers, he said N.Y. area subscribers signed up in droves, despite initial glitches with system. VoD is “going to change this industry,” he said. Speaking at CTAM Broadband Opportunity Conference in Tyson’s Corner, Va., Dolan told how Cablevision executives introduced iO in letter to customers warning that they could experience problems at outset because company was new to digital. “If you are willing to be tolerant of the problems that we are going to have at the outset, then return the enclosed card and we'll give you a priority installation,” Dolan quoted letter as saying. “We've never had a higher return to a direct mail piece.”
Concurrent Computer Corp. said it was expanding its subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) tests in Columbia, S.C., to 2 additional Time Warner systems in Summerville and Myrtle Beach, bringing to 6 number of SVOD trials. Company said its MediaHawk Model 2000 was being used in all 4 current SVOD trials, including TW’s Home Box Office test in Columbia. Trials allow 328,000 basic subscribers in Columbia to have HBO movies and original HBO programs on demand with VCR functionality, including pause, fast-forward, rewind. MediaHawk video servers used in Columbia are capable of 5,440 streams and nearly 2,000 movie titles, as well as back-office services such as billing and subscription management, company said. Trials are on both Scientific-Atlanta and Motorola digital networks and involve SVOD programming providers, including Starz Encore, HBO and Showtime, Concurrent said.

At Billboard Music Video Conference, panelists said gratuitous violence or depiction of drug use or sexual activity were major reasons for videos not to be aired. “Violence without any purpose is a big no-no, as well as sex-role stereotyping, which is a line that keeps moving but is still a big issue for us,” Much Music’s David Kines said, and it’s still important to contextualize content. VH1 Vp-Programming Paul Marzalek said it was often simply matter of demonstration appeal.

Showtime Networks executive Mark Greenberg extols virtues of TiVo device that allows his children to pause live TV, but Greg DePrez of Starz Encore Group believes operators can offer much fresher material out of head-end. They were among 7 panelists discussing next generation of video-on-demand (VOD) at VoD Summit in N.Y.C. Tues. They agreed, however, that hybrid of network and personal video recorder (PVR) devices based in home would be embraced by cable industry for immediate future. For example, Greenberg, exec. vp-corporate strategy & communications at Showtime, likes ability to skip commercials on home PVR. However, DePrez, vp-subscription VoD at Starz, says PVRs are “nice, but they don’t predict what you're going to watch.”
Microsoft will roll out Intertainer video-on-demand (VoD) subscription service today (Thurs.) in nation’s top 35 broadband markets at www.intertainer.tv. Intertainer will be promoted through co-branded Web pages Oct. 24 on MSN Entertainment. Intertainer offers films, TV shows, music videos and concerts for broadband-connected PCs. Companies touted service as better than VHS quality, with no titles ever out of stock, no worn-out tapes or late fees. Intertainer library has programming from more than 70 content providers and its partners include A&E TV Networks, Discovery Channel, Dreamworks, EMI Music, ESPN, NBC, New Line Cinema, PBS, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros., others. Service is delivered using Microsoft’s Windows Media, and content is protected with Windows Media Digital Rights Management. All video content is encoded at 500 kbps using Windows Media Video 8 to deliver full-screen video. Content plays in an embedded Windows Media Player that offers VCR functionality, allowing viewers to pause, rewind and fast-forward. Intertainer’s subscription service begins with FirstPass, which gives subscribers unlimited access to a library of TV, life-style and children’s programs for $7.99 per month. Programming is updated every week. Once users sign up for FirstPass, full-length feature films can be purchased on a pay-per-view basis. New releases are $3.99, library titles $2.99 and music videos free. Internet subscribers with broadband connection speeds of at least 580 kbps who reside in country’s top 35 broadband markets will be able to access service. Viewers can watch directly on PC or on TV linked to PC with S-video cable or a wireless connection.
Level 3 said it would provide Prodigy with dial-up modem Internet access service. Agreement follows Level 3’s buying rights to offer service to former customers of NaviPath, which suspended dial-up operations week ago. With addition of Prodigy, Level 3 provides service to 9 largest dial-up Internet service providers (ISPs) in U.S. Company said it had signed or was pursuing deals with other NaviPath ISP customers. Level 3 platform will allow Prodigy to support pending ITU v.92 modem standard intended to replace v.90, or 56 kbps modem, now used by dial-up ISPs. NaviPath had been one of few ISPs to begin tests of v.92 modems. New modems use updated chipset to improve dial-up services, which proponents say will slow migration of dial-up customers to broadband DSL or cable modems. Improvements include: (1) Quicker connections of 18-20 sec., compared with current 30-35 sec. with v.90. (2) Faster uploads from revised data compression to 48 kbps from 33.6 kbps. (3) Modem-on-hold function allows users to put data connection on pause while answering incoming phone call.
Proposal for terrestrial DTV copy protection and encryption by 5 Hollywood studios has been delivered to Digital Transmission Licensing Authority (DTLA), Pres. Michael Ayers told us (CD July 23 p6, July 19 p3). Memo of Understanding among Disney, MGM, Paramount, 20th Century Fox and Universal will embrace DTLA’s Digital Transmission Content Protection (DTCP) for cable and satellite DTV, as Sony and Warner have, and proposed digital watermark for terrestrial broadcasts, Disney Exec. Vp-Govt. Relations Preston Padden told us last week. Ayers said DTLA had no comment on studios’ proposal yet, pending review by member companies. Meanwhile, he offered additional details on how hard- disc PVRs would function under DTCP’s “Copy Never” mode for time- sensitive pay-per-view or video-on-demand programming. Content owner would allow PVR to capture program and pause it during viewing for “rolling windows” at least 90 min. after each increment is received, Ayers said. For example, if 2-hour movie is paused 15 min. into viewing, increment of program beginning at 15th minute would be accessible for at least next 90 min. Same 90-min. viewing window would apply to all subsequent pauses, he told us. Studios are free to offer less restrictive windows, but 90 min. is minimum viewing period, Ayers said. After increments are viewed, they no longer are accessible from PVR. Pause increments needn’t be time-based but could be counted according to frames, megabytes transmitted, etc., Ayers told us.
5C digital copy protection technology standard developed by TV set makers and software developers can accommodate watermark technology designed to protect over-air broadcasts against unauthorized copying, Digital Transmission Licensing Administrator (DTLA) Michael Ayers confirmed (CD July 19 p3). Although 5C system doesn’t incorporate own watermark, it won’t strip out one or more “consensus watermarks” that might be agreed upon by industry groups, he told us. Ayers also said 5C’s strictest “copy never” restrictions still would permit personal video recorder users to pause pay-per-view, video-on-demand and other time- sensitive programming for at least 90 min. after movie or show had ended.
Cracking Hollywood’s solid wall of opposition to 5C digital copy protection technology standards, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Warner Bros. signed long-term licensing agreements with leading TV set makers and software developers. As expected, accords between 2 studios and Digital Transmission Licensing Administrator (DTLA) mean Sony and Warner Bros. digital programming distributed through cable and satellite set-top boxes will be encrypted against copying by TV viewers and Internet users without studios’ permission, with copying restrictions varying according to 3 general classes of programming. But deals don’t cover over-air broadcasts, main sticking point that still prevents other 5 major studios from reaching agreement on copy protection standards. Terms weren’t disclosed.
