Shortly after release of the court decision, the FCC said it planned to seek a stay of the court’s order and an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. The announcement came from Comrs. Copps, Martin and Adelstein, who made up the majority in the split decision last year. NARUC said it “expects to seek review” as well.

MT Picture Display Corp., the Matsushita-Toshiba CRT joint venture, pared 25 salaried positions from its Troy, O., CRT plant, amid a 20% drop in tube prices. The job cut leaves the factory, which operates 5 production lines, with 217 salaried and slightly more than 1,000 hourly workers. Matsushita and Toshiba merged tube operations last year to form MT and trimmed 250 salaried and hourly positions at a CRT plant in Horseheads, N.Y., in Dec.
Take-Two Interactive’s Mafia for PS2 was once again the top- rented videogame in the U.S., Rentrak said its preliminary Home Video Essentials data for the week ended Feb. 22 showed Thurs. The game earned $346,392 in its 4th week of availability, boosting earnings to date to $1.03 million. Take-Two’s Manhunt - - for PS2, like every other game in the top 10 once again -- was at #9 (up one) in its 14th week, earning $131,190, for $2.59 million to date. Activision once again had 2 titles in the top 10: True Crime: Streets of L.A. at #5 (down one, 16th week, $198,944, for $4.77 million to date) and Tony Hawk’s Underground at #6 (down one, 17th week, $155,827, for $4.89 million). Rounding out the top 10 were Sony Computer Entertainment’s SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs at #8 again in its 16th week ($135,353, total of $3.69 million) and Atari’s Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2 at #10 (down 3, 12th week, $124,077, total $2.67 million).
In its first full week of availability, Fox Home Entertainment’s Runaway Jury was the #1-rented title on DVD and VHS in the U.S., Rentrak’s preliminary Home Video Essentials data for the week ended Feb. 22 showed Thurs. Rentrak said the title earned $8.12 million in the week, for $8.23 million to date. On DVD alone, the title earned $6.26 million, for a total of $6.34 million. Runaway Jury knocked Columbia TriStar’s Radio out of the top spot to #2 in its 4th week. Rentrak said Radio earned $4.51 million on DVD and VHS for $28.26 million to date. On DVD alone, it earned $3.36 million for a total of $21.59 million. The only other new title in the top 10 was Paramount’s comedy Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star at #3, earning $4.42 million, and $4.46 million to date. On DVD it earned $3.72 million, for a total of $3.74 million.
