CBP agriculture specialists at Brownsville intercepted live wood-boring insects on two shipments of stainless steel sheets transported on solid wood packaging materials, CBP said. The insects, quarantine-significant bark beetles of the Scolytidae family, were collected Dec. 27 from wooden pallets used in the transport of stainless steel sheets being imported into the U.S. from Mexico. As a result, the shipment was sent back to Mexico. CBP said its specialists in Brownsville have discovered such pests multiple times in shipments from various importers, and importers who have made multiple attempts to enter with violative wood materials have been penalized.

The new CBP inspection facility at Amistad Dam will be closed from Jan. 7 to Jan. 19 due to maintenance, CBP said. It said the temporary closure will allow for the safe demolition of the old facility. CBP opened the new facility Dec. 11.

CBP approved changes to the Cal Cartage CES Trade Enforcement fee schedule, it said in a Jan. 7 public bulletin from the Los Angeles field office. The Los Angeles/Long Beach Seaport had proposed the changes Oct. 22. CBP is providing another 30 days to comment on a proposal to extend a previously approved information collection the issuance of administrative rulings, it said in a Federal Register notice scheduled for Jan. 9. Comments will now be due Feb. 8.
CBP is changing the FCL Logistics Trade Enforcement Centralized Examination Station fee schedule, it said in a public notice dated Jan. 7 from the Los Angeles Field Office. The changes will take effect after a 30-day public comment period, if approved by the port director. The new fees are:
CBP said it has completed the system changes in ACS to allow submission of an informal entry using the informal value limit of $2,500. CBP had announced the change, indicated in CSMS 12-000572, last month (see ITT's Online Archives 12120533. The trade may now begin sumbitting informal entries using the new informal value limit, it said (here). In addition, it said, tariff numbers that are indicated in the following sections and chapters will no longer require a formal entry if the value is greater than $250.
