The Consumer Product Safety Commission is announcing that it will hold a September 14, 2011 decisional meeting on a draft proposed rule to establish a consumer product safety standard for play yards. CPSC states that this rulemaking is pursuant to Section 104 of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA), which requires the agency to promulgate safety standards for durable infant or toddler products (of which play yards are one). The Consumer Product Safety Commission has posted a draft Federal Register notice for Commissioner approval on the development of a strategic outreach and education plan to help the business community and other stakeholders learn about the testing and certification requirements for children's toys and toy chests and their compliance with toy standard ASTM F 963-08 (and section 4.27 on toy chests from an earlier version of the toy standard). The CPSC Commissioners' votes on this notice are due by August 17, 2011.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission states that it will host the biennial U.S.-China Product Safety Summit in Washington DC on October 13-14, 2011. The Summit will include public sessions. Further details and registration information will be published on the CPSC website in coming weeks. In addition, contact information will be provided when this announcement is updated.
Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman Tenenbaum has issued a statement regarding the minor reorganization of the CPSC. The Chairman states that the Commission-approved changes, which are already effective, will enable CPSC to continue its transformation into a proactive safety agency determined to protect the public against unreasonable risks of injury from consumer products, and will facilitate achievement of CPSC’s vision to be the recognized global leader in consumer product safety.
