The Food and Drug Administration is reopening the comment period for the proposed rule published in the Federal Register of April 17, 1997 which would replace the voluntary petition process to affirm the generally recognized as safe (GRAS) status of a substance intended for use in food for humans or animals with a voluntary notification procedure. FDA is reopening the comment period to update comments and clarify the criteria for exempting the use of a substance as GRAS. Comments on the proposed rule are due by March 28, 2011.
