Senator Says Nigeria Sanctions Bill Still Needed After US Air Strikes
Last month's U.S. air strikes on Islamic State militants in Nigeria have not eliminated the need for a bill to impose property-blocking sanctions on Nigerian officials who permit or promote the persecution of Christians and other religious minorities, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said Jan. 6. “I think the legislation remains important,” he said.

His comment came hours before Senate Foreign Relations Committee Jim Risch, R-Idaho, said Christians continue to face "disturbing" threats in Nigeria, as well as across Africa.
Cruz introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act in September, saying the persecution of Christians and other religious minorities is “endemic” in Nigeria (see 2509120001). The bill remains pending before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
