Senate Passes Bill to Speed Up Arms Sales to Taiwan
The Senate approved a bill Dec. 11 that would give Taiwan the shorter formal congressional notification timelines and higher weapons value notification thresholds enjoyed by NATO members, plus Australia, Israel, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea (see 2505140001 and 2510220035).

The Senate amended the original text by adding a seven-year sunset for the shorter timelines and higher thresholds.
While the original text would require the State Department to create an expedited decision-making process to transfer U.S.-made defense equipment from NATO Plus countries to Taiwan, the Senate-passed version would require State to brief Congress on the feasibility of creating an expedited process.
