App Association Flags 'Compliance Traps' in State Age-Verification Laws
The differences among app store age-verification laws in four states “may look small on paper, but they can create serious compliance traps for small developers trying to ship nationwide,” ACT | The App Association said Friday.

The association published a compliance guide that follows up on a November report about the growing array of age-verification laws (see 2511180012). ACT’s guide addresses age-verification laws that make requirements for app stores and developers, including in California, Louisiana, Texas and Utah.
The Texas and Utah laws take effect soonest, on Jan. 1, with the Louisiana law following on July 1. California’s measure, which takes a somewhat different approach by requiring an age-signaling system (see 2510140010), won’t take effect until Jan. 1, 2027.
ACT noted that it’s supporting a legal challenge to the Texas law, which seeks a preliminary injunction to stop it from taking effect. An oral argument in that case is set for Tuesday. ACT and several others filed amicus briefs last week (see 2512150023).
