Senator Guarded on Selling F-35s, Chips to Saudi Arabia
Senate Foreign Relations Committee ranking member Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., said late Nov. 18 that President Donald Trump’s plan to sell F-35 jets to Saudia Arabia (see 2511180041) “raises major concerns” about protecting U.S. military technology. She urged the Trump administration to explain to the committee why the sale is vital to U.S. national interests.

Shaheen also said the administration should consult with Congress about any deals it reaches to provide advanced computing chips to Saudi Arabia. “These chips are central to maintaining America’s lead over China in artificial intelligence and enable significant technological capabilities that will require greater scrutiny around their end use,” she said. “We cannot risk compromising our technological advantage and economic prospects.”
The Commerce Department on Nov. 19 announced plans to approve exports of advanced chips to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (see 2511190068).
