Lawmaker Opposes End of Arms Embargo on Cambodia
House Foreign Affairs Committee ranking member Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., criticized the Trump administration Nov. 6 for removing the U.S. arms embargo on Cambodia, saying the decision ignored “broad bipartisan concern about the Cambodian government's human rights abuses and its deepening ties to Beijing.”

A Meeks press release said the Biden administration imposed the embargo in 2021 due to concerns about the Cambodian military's cooperation with China. The release also cited a 2024 State Department report describing the Cambodian government's use of torture and other forms of inhumane treatment.
The State Department announced in late October that it would be lifting the embargo because of Cambodia’s "diligent pursuit of peace and security" (see 2510270017 and 2511060016).
