Ban on Import of Russian Uranium Passes Both Chambers
A bill that would ban the import of Russian uranium 90 days from enactment passed the Senate by unanimous consent on April 30. The Prohibiting Russian Uranium Act had passed the House in December (see 2312120008).

Roughly one-fifth of nuclear power plants run on Russian uranium; the bill does allow the Energy Department to grant waivers to the ban if there is no other viable source of the fuel. However, the allowed waiver amount would decline each year, and no waiver would be allowed after 2027.
“With the passage of our legislation, America is taking an important step to spur uranium conversion and enrichment in the U.S., support advanced nuclear development and energy independence, and end Russian control of the global nuclear fuel supply chain," lead sponsor Sen. Jim Risch, R-Idaho, said in a press release.
