CPSC Proposes Changes to Safety Standard for Bassinets and Cradles
The Consumer Product Safety Commission is proposing to amend its existing children’s product safety standard for bassinets and cradles, adopting revisions to the relevant ASTM industry standard with changes.

If adopted as final, the revisions would take effect six months after the publication date of any final rule amending the safety standard. While CPSC is proposing new requirements under the standard, “the test methods and test equipment are not unique, in that other CPSC rules also use the same methods and equipment,” the commission said.
The proposed rule comes after CPSC’s rejection of the revised ASTM standard in 2022, partly due to the commission’s disagreement with the revised industry standard’s creation of a new category of requirements for “compact bassinets.”
The proposal incorporates the revised standard by reference, “but with modifications that exclude from the mandatory rule “compact bassinets” and associated requirements,” CPSC said. Other modifications to the existing standard address suffocation hazard from non-level bassinets and cradles, hazards from putting bassinets and cradles on elevated and soft surfaces, suffocation hazard from mattresses and hazards from electrical problems, among other things.
