Bipartisan Letter Calls for Ban on Indian Shrimp
Reps. Garret Graves, R-La., and Mary Sattler Peltola, D-Alaska, asked the administration to halt the import of shrimp from India, following an exposé of labor violations in Indian shrimp processing facilities. The two said the report also showed "severe food and safety issues" with the shrimp. The report didn't at all focus on food safety, only glancingly mentioning that shrimp can be overtreated with antibiotics in India.

"The minimal testing combined with the huge quantity of shrimp entering the United States means that there is a high risk of shrimp with traces of antibiotics entering the U.S. market from India," the report said.
"We need to be doing everything we can to stop bad imports from reaching consumers, especially when we have high-quality, healthy shrimp right here at home," Graves said in the press release announcing the letter addressed to President Joe Biden.
