Extending EU Safeguard Duties on Steel Products Weighed
The European Commission launched an investigation on whether safeguard duties on certain steel products should be extended beyond June 30, the Directorate-General for Trade announced. Under World Trade Organization rules, the commission will be able to extend the duties for only another two years. The rules allow safeguard measures for a maximum of eight years, which in this instance would be June 30, 2026.

The commission opened the case following a request from 14 EU member states. The investigation will center on whether the safeguard measure continues to be needed to remedy injury to the EU steel industry and whether the "industry is adjusting," the commission said. The inquiry will wrap up before June 30, it said.
All interested parties have until Feb. 26 to "make their views known."
