US, UK Coordinate on New Hamas Sanctions
The U.S. and the U.K. this week announced new sanctions against members of the Hamas terror group, designating “key officials” who represent the group abroad and manage its finances. The Office of Foreign Assets Control said the designations were “closely coordinated” with the U.K.’s Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation and are aimed at disrupting Hamas fundraising campaigns designed to funnel revenue to Hamas military activities in Gaza.

Both OFAC and OFSI sanctioned Ali Abed Al Rahman Baraka, the Lebanon-based leader of Hamas’ National Relations Abroad, and Maher Rebhi Namr Obeid, a senior Lebanon-based Hamas political leader and member of Hamas’ Political Bureau since 2010. OFSI sanctioned five other people with ties to the group -- many of whom OFAC already sanctioned in November (see 2311140008). OFAC sanctioned six others, including multiple Hamas officials based in Turkey.
