EU Issues Annual Progress Report on Strategy Against WMD Proliferation
The EU released Oct. 20 its annual report on the implementation of the bloc's strategy targeting weapons of mass destruction proliferation. The report breaks down the state of issues regarding nuclear, chemical and biological issues, along with the current export control and sanctions regimes geared towards addressing these problems.

The EU said it "fully supports the existing multilateral export control regimes" for their role in "preventing the proliferation of WMDs." As a result, the bloc said, it continued to oppose in the U.N. General Assembly the "First Committee the Chinese resolution 'Promoting International Cooperation on Peaceful Uses in the Context of International Security', including by global outreach and meeting with regional groups of UN Member States ahead of voting." The resolution is aimed at undermining export control regimes, the report said.
It also encouraged all U.N. members to implement the Security Council's sanctions on North Korea and Syria. The EU also noted it regrets the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, and urged the "resumption of full implementation of all JCPOA commitments" by the U.S. and Iran (see 2310180071).
