WTO's Plastics Pollution Dialogue Sets Priorities for MC13
Participants in the World Trade Organization's Dialogue on Plastics Pollution and Environmentally Sustainable Plastics Trade made "substantial progress" at their May 25 meeting, introducing a draft vision on future negotiations and "elements for a potential outcome at the 13th Ministerial Conference" set to be held in February, the WTO announced. The document "sets out a range of shared principles and priorities for collective actions, with the aim of effectively addressing this challenge" of plastics pollution, the WTO said.

Among the participants' priorities are collaborating with the World Customs Organization to amend the Harmonized System for traded goods to "ensure more effective monitoring and regulation of plastics trade," and supporting the conclusion of U.N. talks on a binding instrument on plastics pollution by 2024. "Other priorities include promoting the adoption of sustainable and effective non-plastic substitutes, alternatives and re-use systems and facilitating access to technologies for environmentally sound waste management," the WTO said.
