Bipartisan Bill Introduced to Renew HELP

Two Republicans and two Democrats have introduced a bill to renew HELP, the Haiti Economic Lift Program, which would extend tariff breaks for apparel from Haiti for 10 years beyond the current 2025 expiration date. The products covered are 93% of Haitian exports, according to Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.

Rubio said in a press release,“It is in our national interest to help Haiti as it faces unimaginable hardships as a result of political corruption, natural disasters, and rampant crime. The HELP Act is an important bipartisan measure that will extend trade benefits and boost the country’s largest industry.”

Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., said in the same release that the bill "will promote a better future for us all and I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to get this over the finish line.”

Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., said: "Natural disasters and political unrest have devastated families in Haiti. Extending trade benefits is good for the U.S., provides the starving Haitian people with needed resources, and will help stem the exodus from the island.”

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., is the other original co-sponsor.
