Russia's Wagner Group Bought Weapons From North Korea, US Says
The Wagner Group, a Russian private military company, bought arms from North Korea to use in its war in Ukraine, Reuters reported last week. The report came the same day the Commerce Department announced new, stricter license requirements for exports to the Wagner Group, which were designed to limit the company’s ability to buy weapons for the Russian government (see 2212210080).

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said last week the U.S. is working “with our allies and partners to make sure that not only are we putting pressure on North Korea to end these practices," including its missile development program, "but we’re making sure that we’re putting in place what is needed to deter aggression directly against any of our partners, as well as against us, and if necessary defend against it.”
Canada said it “unequivocally condemns” North Korea’s delivery of arms to the Wagner Group, saying it “clearly violates international law and United Nations Security Council resolutions.” The country said it “has already imposed severe sanctions on the Russian regime, including on the Wagner Group, as well as sweeping and comprehensive sanctions on the North Korean dictatorship. We will continue to work with international partners to address these developments and respond to further arms deliveries should they take place.”
