BNSF to Invest in Inland Intermodal Facility
A new integrated rail complex about 130 miles inland from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach will be built by BNSF Railway for $1.5 billion, the company announced Oct. 1. The Barstow International Gateway will include warehouses, a rail yard and an intermodal facility. Containers will be able to go from ships to rail and not be staged for their final destinations until Barstow.

“By allowing for more efficient transfer of cargo directly between ships and rail, the Barstow International Gateway will maximize rail and distribution efficiency regionally and across the U.S. supply chain and reduce truck traffic and freeway congestion in the Los Angeles Basin and the Inland Empire,” said Katie Farmer, president and CEO of BNSF. “This will play a critical role in improving fluidity throughout our rail network, moving containers off the ports quicker, and facilitating improved efficiency at our existing intermodal hubs, including those in the Midwest and Texas."
Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka said, "BNSF’s planned Barstow International Gateway will improve cargo velocity through our port and reduce truck traffic on our freeways."
Port of Long Beach Executive Director Mario Cordero said, “The Port of Long Beach welcomes BNSF’s planned Barstow International Gateway in the High Desert. This project will help improve supply chain fluidity, reduce environmental impacts and enhance the competitiveness of California and the nation’s largest port complex."
