DeLauro, Durbin Propose Moving Food Regulation Out of FDA
House Appropriations Committee Chair Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., and five other Democratic members of the House and two Democratic senators, have introduced a bill that would move food regulation currently in handled by FDA to a new agency in the Health and Human Services Department.

“Food safety is currently a second-class citizen at the Food and Drug Administration,” DeLauro said in a July 13 press release. “Right now, there are no food policy experts in charge of food safety at the FDA. That is unacceptable and contributes to a string of product contaminations and subsequent recalls that disrupt the supply chain, contribute to rising prices, and in many cases, result in consumer illness and death. Look no further than the recent infant formula crisis to understand the need to create a single food safety agency, led by a food policy expert, to ensure the safety of products that go to market.”
Sens. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Dick Blumenthal, D-Conn., are the original co-sponsors in the Senate.
