OFAC Sanctions Iran Oil Network, Issues More Cuba Sanctions

The Office of Foreign Assets Control on Aug. 13 sanctioned an Omani businessman and his companies for aiding an international oil smuggling network that supports Iran. The agency also designated more Cuban government officials and a military unit for human rights violations.

OFAC said Omani national Al Habsi has helped ship Iranian oil through his various companies to hide the involvement of the sanctioned Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force. OFAC designated Habsi and several of his businesses, including Nimr International, Orbit Petrochemicals Trading, Bravery Maritime, Nimr International and the Liberia-flagged vessel Oman Pride.

OFAC also sanctioned the Tropas de Prevencion of the Cuban Ministry of Revolutionary Armed Forces and two Cuban Ministry of the Interior officials: Romarico Vidal Sotomayor Garcia and Pedro Orlando Martinez Fernandez. The military unit and the officials were involved in the government’s suppression of recent pro-democracy protests. OFAC Director Andrea Gacki said the agency will continue to announce Cuba sanctions for the government’s human rights violations.
