Maersk Suspending Some Bookings After Suez Canal Blockage

Maersk reduced its Spot online booking service as it assesses the impact of last month’s Suez Canal blockage on global shipping and supply chains, the company said in an April 5 advisory. The reduction is expected to affect exports from Asia, Europe, the Americas and Africa, Maersk said. The company wants to “ensure that what we sell to our customers, we can deliver.”

Export Compliance Daily combines U.S. export control news, foreign border import regulation and policy developments into a single daily information service that reliably informs its trade professional readers about important current issues affecting their operations.

“Our people are working relentlessly with all the information at hand to alleviate the knock-on effects of the Suez blockage,” the shipping company said. “As we begin to better understand the impact of the delays across the vessels, port and terminal backlogs, we will be able to open Maersk Spot booking acceptance again on affected trading routes.” Maersk added it’s seeing a decrease in the “queue of vessels waiting to transit” the Suez Canal, and while inbound vessels are experiencing a one or two-day delay, the company expects to have a “blank sheet” later this week.
