May retail sales jumped 17.7% from April but were down 6.1% year over year, it said. That followed a 14.7% month-over-month drop in April. The report was “very encouraging news at a time when we need to focus on what will happen as retail doors open once again,” said NRF CEO Matthew Shay. “For a sick economy, there is no better medicine than retailers responding to consumers who are ready to safely return to stores.”
