Huawei, Disney Have Q1 Lobbying Spending Gains; TIA, NTCA Post Declines

Disney, Huawei and ViacomCBS were among telecom and tech entities reporting increased Q1 lobbying spending by Monday afternoon. Microsoft, NAB and the Telecommunications Industry Association showed declines over the same period in 2019.

Huawei had the largest percentage spending increase in Q1, to $180,000, up 227% from 2019. The Chinese telecom gear maker faced significant U.S. scrutiny, including enactment of the Secure and Trusted Communications Networks Act. The law allocates $1 billion to help U.S. communications providers remove from their networks Chinese equipment determined to threaten national security (see 2003120061).

Disney disclosed $1.36 million, up more than 67%. ViacomCBS said it spent $738,000 in Q1, up more than 43% from Q1 2019. USTelecom spent $530,000, up 29%.

TIA had the largest percentage decline from 2019, saying it spent $50,000, down more than 54%. Microsoft said it spent $2.39 million, down more than 39%. NTCA spent $110,000, down 31%. NAB spent $2.72 million, down more than 30%. BSA|The Software Alliance spent $330,000, down 25%. The Computer & Communications Industry Association had $40,000, down 20%. Twitter spent $350,000, down more than 16%.

NCTA reported $3.54 million, the largest total of any tech and telecom entity so far. The group’s total was up almost 8%. IBM said it expended $1.59 million, down more than 18%. The Wireless Infrastructure Association spent $190,000, down more than 9%. ACA Connects spent $160,000, level with 2019.
