OFAC, UN Issue Mali Sanctions
The Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned five people in Mali for threatening the country’s peace and obstructing humanitarian aid, Treasury said in a Dec. 20 press release. The United Nations Security Council also designated the five people, imposing asset freezes throughout UN member states, according to a Dec. 19 press release.

The sanctions target Houka Houka Ag Alhousseini, a fighter in the designated Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin; Mahri Sidi Amar Ben Daha, a transportation company operator involved in drug trafficking; and Mohamed Ben Ahmed Mahri, a financer of armed terrorist groups. OFAC also sanctioned Mohamed Ould Mataly, who helped threaten stability in Mali, for blockading a venue for “regional consultations,” and Ahmed Ag Albachar, president of a humanitarian commission who has extorted aid organizations.
