Mexico Formalizes Import Restrictions for African Swine Fever

Mexico recently issued regulations formalizing import restrictions put in place in 2018 meant to protect against the introduction of African swine fever, according to a press release from the Mexican Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER). Export Compliance Daily combines U.S. export control news, foreign border import regulation and policy developments into a single daily information service that reliably informs its trade professional readers about important current issues affecting their operations.

The regulations prohibit the importation of certain animals, animal products and other merchandise from regions with active cases of African swine fever, and provide for the establishment of zoosanitary requirements for other regions, according to a circular from the Mexican Confederation of Customs Broker Associations (CAAAREM) posted by consultancy AJR Comercio Exterior. When SADER determines a risk for importation of regulated products, it may immediately update, cancel or suspend conditions for importation.

A separate CAAAREM circular lists countries with active cases and countries for which import requirements have not yet been set. Countries with active outbreaks include Belgium, Bulgaria, Cambodia, China, South Korea, Slovakia, Estonia, Hong Kong, Hungary, Laos, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Myanmar, Nigeria, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, South Africa, Ukraine, Vietnam, Zimbabwe and Zambia. Countries with cases limited to certain regions include Sierra Leone, Italy (Sardinia), the Republic of the Congo, Namibia, Malawi, Burkina Faso and Senegal. Countries where outbreaks are over but do not yet have requirements set for importation of swine include Chad, Mongolia, the Czech Republic and the Ivory Coast.
