The government of Canada recently issued the following trade-related notices as of May 22 (note that some may also be given separate headlines):

  • Repeal of the United States Surtax Order (Steel and Aluminum) and order on U.S. other goods. The Canada Border Services Agency on May 19 issued Customs Notice 19-09 to indicate that importers will no longer be required to pay a surtax on steel & aluminum (SOR/2018-152) and other goods (SOR/2018-153) originating in the United States.
  • CFIA suspends food license of processor La Stella Foods. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency suspended the Safe Food for Canadians License of food processor La Stella Foods Manufacturing Ltd. of Burnaby, British Columbia, effective May 3, 2019. While there is no food recall associated with the license suspension, the company may not conduct any activity related to the license it was issued because it failed to comply with provisions on sanitation and pest control under section 51 of the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations.
