Industry Pleased With End to Canada's Tariffs on US Boats

The National Marine Manufacturers Association celebrated Canada's full removal of tariffs on multiple types of boats from the U.S., in a May 6 news release. The Department of Finance Canada recently announced the change, which is expected to run in Canada Gazette on May 15, the NMMA said. Effective April 30, Canada's 10 percent retaliatory tariffs won't apply to the following items:

  • 8903.10.00 -- Inflatable boats
  • 8903.91.00 -- Other: Sailboats, with or without auxiliary motor
  • 8903.92.00 -- Other: Motorboats, other than outboard motorboats
  • 8903.99.90 -- Other: Other vessels for pleasure, outboard motorboats.

Those items were already included in the list of goods subject to granted remission of the tariffs, but remission was allowed only under certain conditions. "Together, NMMA and NMMA Canada -- along with the broader recreational boating industry -- led the charge in highlight[ing] retaliatory tariffs’ debilitating effects to small businesses on both sides of the border and advocating for their removal." Canada implemented tariffs of 10 percent and 25 percent in response to the U.S. Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum.
