Canadian Government Notices for March 21

The government of Canada recently issued the following trade-related notices for March 21 (note that some may also be given separate headlines):

  • Canada-Japan free trade negations could resume. A leading Japanese trade policy expert Masahiro Kawai the former chief economist for the World Bank's East Asia and Pacific Region has indicated that now that the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) are over Canada and Japan may be ready to work toward a free trade agreement.   • Canadian trucking tonnage. Statistics Canada has announced that from 2009 to 2014 the total tonnage of freight hauled by the Canadian trucking industry increased 41.1%, as both domestic and trans border shipments rose. (here)
  • Additional sanctions on individuals and entities for activities related to Russia and Ukraine. The Special Economic Measures (Russia) Regulations have been amended to list 10 additional entities and two additional individuals in Schedule 1 that are subject to an asset freeze and dealings prohibition. The Special Economic Measures (Ukraine) Regulations have also been amended to list four additional entities and three additional individuals that are subject to an asset freeze and dealings prohibition.
