EU Government Notices for May 21-22

The European Union issued the following trade-related releases May 21-22 (notices of most significance will be given separate headlines):

  • Commercial vehicles consultations. The EU has requested World Trade Organization (WTO) consultations with Russia. The EU believes the anti-dumping duties imposed by Russia on light commercial vehicle imports from Germany and Italy are incompatible with WTO law. Duties amount to approximately 26-29% on the vehicles. Consultations will last 60 days and if they are not successful the EU may request the WTO to issue a formal panel review. (here)
  • Preferential Trade Agreement safeguards. The European Court of Auditors (ECA) has issued a report concluding that the European Commission does not adequately measure the economic impact of Preferential Trade Agreements. They also concluded that weak customs controls on the borders of many Member States result in loss of revenue for the EU since certain imports incorrectly receive tariff preferences. (here)
  • Recalls. The European Commission issued its weekly list of measures to prevent or restrict the marketing or use of 24 products in the EU, including certain clothing, toys, cosmetics, and electrical appliances. (here)
