State Issues Travel Warning for Chad, Burundi and Sudan
The Department of State issued Travel Warnings for Chad, Burundi and Sudan, warning U.S. citizens over threats to Westerners and Western interests. The Travel Warning for Chad, issued on Oct. 10 (here), advises U.S. citizens to avoid travel in eastern Chad and border regions. Incidents of robbery, carjacking at gunpoint, and murder are reported in the country, and the central government wields minimal influence in rural areas, said State.

The Travel Warning for Burundi, issued on Oct. 11 (here), warns U.S. citizens over possible retaliation from Al-Shabaab, a militant Somali Islamist group, due to the Burundi government peacekeeping involvement in Somalia. Al-Shabaab has threatened to conduct terrorist attacks in Burundi and may also target U.S. interests, said State. The militant group launched an attack in Nairobi, Kenya in September that lasted for several days and claimed more than 60 lives. The attack prompted the U.S. government to issue a Travel Warning for Kenya on Sept. 27 (see 13093030). The Travel Warning for Sudan, issued on Oct. 11 (here), warned U.S. citizens against travel to the Darfur region of Sudan and the Blue Nile and Southern Kordofan states, where separate conflicts are being waged. Terrorist groups may commit attacks involving suicide operations, bombings, or kidnappings, State said.
