Canadian Government Notices for May 22

The government of Canada issued the following trade-related notices for May 24 (Note that some may also be given separate headlines.)

  • United States Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) statement. The Minister of International Trade Ed Fast along with the Minister of Agriculture Gerry Ritz issued a statement regarding COOL expressing their displeasure with regulatory changes put forward by the United States as it would discriminate against Canadian cattle and hogs while increasing damages to the industry on both sides of the border.   • Seed regulations for soybean and forage varieties. The CFIA has proposed amendments to seed regulations which will lower cost and time delays and allow for faster commercialization of new varieties for farmers by removing pre-registration testing. (here)
  • Canada agricultural trade partnership with Russia and Kazakhstan. The Minister of Agriculture Gerry Ritz has concluded a successful trade mission to Russia and Kazakhstan where he strengthened the trade relationship by promoting Canada’s livestock. Canada exported over $21 million of agri-food products to Kazakhstan and $563 million to Russia in 2012 along with securing the signing of commercial contracts valued at up to $11 million. (here)
  • Copper tubing. The CBSA announced that it is initiating investigations into alleged injurious dumping and subsidizing of certain copper tubing originating in or exported from China, Brazil, Greece, Korea, Mexico and the alleged subsidizing of copper tube from China. (here)
  • Cadmium testing in rice. The CFIA conducted routine testing of 280 food samples of domestic and imported rice based products and analyzed them for metal cadmium and were determined to be safe for consumption. (here)
  • NEXUS lanes at Queenstown-Lewiston Bridge. The CBSA announced the opening of an additional NEXUS lane at the Queenstown-Lewiston Bridge which will provide for more efficient clearance of low risk travelers entering Canada. (here)
  • NAFTA textile/apparel TPL utilization. DFAIT updated the 2013 NAFTA textile and apparel tariff preference level utilization rate for imports and exports. (here)
  • Product Recalls. Pro Series Translate Bike Racks manufactured in China (here), Dog and Cat heating and cooling mats manufactured in China (here), Buckyballs magnet sets manufactured in China (here), Les Industries youth beds manufactured in Vietnam or China (here).
