DOT Forming Freight Advisory Committee, Seeking Nominations

The Secretary of Transportation is establishing a National Freight Advisory Committee and seeking nominations for membership, DOT said in a Federal Register notice scheduled for Feb. 19. The NFAC will be established for a 2-year period, it said, to provide advice and recommendations to the Secretary of Transportation on freight transportation, including:

The Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act established a national freight policy and called for the creation of a National Freight Strategic Plan. The collaboration of stakeholders on the committee (here) will promote involvement and compliance with proposed plans and performance measures, DOT said. The committee will have at least 25 voting members and will meet at least three times per year. DOT also proposed the process through which the DOT will designate a national freight network, focusing on the highways most critical to the movement of goods, it said. It will also include the possible addition of 3,000 miles of existing and planned roadways necessary for the efficient movement of goods in the future, it said.
