One hundred countries took part in related actions Sept. 25 through Oct. 2 through the Interpol-led Operation Pangea, a global enforcement operation, “preliminary results” of which showed 79 arrests and the seizure of 3.7 million doses of “potentially life-threatening” counterfeit drugs worth an estimated $10.5 million, ICE said. About 18,000 websites illegally selling counterfeit drugs have been taken down through Pangea, the agency said. U.S. Customs and Border Protection intercepted packages believed to contain fake or illicit drugs, while payment processing companies identified and blocked payments connected to illicit online pharmacies, including individuals who sent spam emails, and identified “abuse of electronic payment systems,” ICE said. The agency, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security, also said it was the first time in the annual Pangea operation that the year-old Center for Safe Internet Pharmacies took part. Facebook joined the center this week, which also includes payment companies and major Internet companies (WID Oct 4 p7).
