FSIS Announces Six Electronic Working Groups on Pesticide Residues

The Food Safety and Inspection Service said the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR) is inviting member countries and observer organizations to participate in the following six electronic working groups:

Priorities: This re-established electronic working group, led by Australia, will work on the Schedules and Priority Lists for the consideration at the 45th Session of CCPR in 2013. Minor Uses and Specialty Crops: This electronic working group, led by France with Kenya and Thailand as co-chairs, will develop criteria for setting the minimum number of field trials needed to support the establishment of maximum residue limits for minor use/specialty crops for the submission of data to the Joint FAO/WHO Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR). Member countries and observer organizations interested in participating in this electronic working group should provide the name(s), official title, and email address of their representative(s) to florence.gerault@agriculture.gouv.fr by Aug. 15. Proportionality: This electronic working group, led by Australia, will develop principles and guidance on the use of proportionality to estimate maximum residue limits. Member countries and observer organizations interested in participating in this working group should provide the name(s), official title, and email address of their representative(s) to codex.contact@daff.gov.au with a copy to raj.bhula@apvma.gov.au by Aug. 15. Methods of Analysis: This electronic working group, led by Australia and co-chaired by China, will prepare a discussion paper on the development of performance criteria for suitability assessment of methods of analysis with consideration given to the working document CX/RVDF 12/20/10 (Appendix to CAC/GL 71-2009 - Guidelines for the Design and Implementation of National Regulatory Food Safety Assurance Programme Associated with the Use of Veterinary Drugs in Food Producing Animals) and associated Codex and other relevant documents to meet CCPR method needs. Risk Analysis Principles: This electronic working group, led by Argentina and co-chaired by Costa Rica, working in English and Spanish, will consider the clarification to be provided by JMPR concerning the toxicological and residue data to be submitted when a chemical is not supported by the manufacturers, regarding Case B of CX/PR 12/44/13 (Rev.). It will also consider the examples of chemicals (dicofol, fenvalerate) that JMPR has evaluated that were not supported by the manufacturer. The working group will also clarify issues related to national monographs and equivalence. Extrapolation of MRLs for Commodity Groups: This electronic working group, led by the Netherlands and co-chaired by the U.S., working in English only, will work on the revision of the Classification for the development of new commodity groups, including the further elaboration of Table 2 on Selection and Examples of Representative Commodities of the Principles and Guidance for the Selection of Representative Commodities for the Extrapolation of Maximum Residue Limits for Pesticides for Commodity Groups. The working group will also work on the review of the commodity groups in the Codex Database for MRLs for Pesticides.
