EU Government Notices for June 2-5

The European Union issued the following trade-related releases on June 2-5, 2012 (notices of most significance will be given separate headlines):

  • EU-Russia Summit. President Barroso of the European Commission, spoke after the recent EU-Russia Summit. He said the "EU is already Russia's biggest commercial partner, accounting for around 50% of all Russian trade. It is also the biggest source of Foreign Direct Investment." The EU is also the biggest customer of Russian energy exports. Russia's WTO accession opens additional opportunities for trade and for the development of bilateral economic relations. Barroso said both countries should actively pursue and "advance the negotiations of the New comprehensive EU-Russia Agreement." (here)
  • EU and Pakistan launch Engagement Plan. Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice President of the Commission, traveled to Pakistan this week to launch a Strategic Dialogue and Plan. As part of a 5-year Engagement Plan, six areas are covered including: Regular Strategic Dialogue between the two countries, cooperation in areas related to stability and security, in particular counter-terrorism, strengthening cooperation and exchange expertise on the functioning of civilian democratic bodies, energy issues, cooperation among areas involving migration and flood issues, and trade promotion. A Free Trade Agreement is being discussed since the overall EU-Pakistan trade volume reached €8.1 billion in 2011. (here)
