FDA Commissioner Asks Industry for "Food Safety First" Mindset, Says Needs Funding for FSMA
In October 4, 2011 remarks before the Annual National Food Policy Conference, Food and Drug Commissioner Margaret Hamburg detailed the work the agency was doing to safeguard U.S. food supplies, including the food that is imported, and said the agency needed to continue to work on preventive controls, importer accountability, compliance, and inspection.

Food Safety Mindset and Need to Fund FSMA
She noted that the Food Safety Modernization (FSMA) is the most sweeping reform of U.S. food laws in more than 70 years, and though FDA officials were "committed to doing our job by allocating our resources based on risks and priorities", the agency cannot do everything it needs to do unless there is a significant infusion of financial resources.
Hamburg also asked that industry, large and small, foreign and domestic, to embrace a “food safety first” mindset.
