EPA Expands List of Acceptable Ozone-Depleting Substitutes

The Environmental Protection Agency has issued a determination of acceptability, effective October 4, 2011, which expands the list of acceptable substitutes for ozone-depleting substances for use in the refrigeration and air conditioning, solvent cleaning, and fire suppression sectors under the EPA's Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) program.

EPA finds Hot Shot 2, R-407 F, and R-507 A are acceptable substitutes for certain refrigeration and air conditioning substances; and finds perfluorobutyl iodide (PFBI) is an acceptable substitute for certain solvent cleaning substances. EPA also finds Firebane® All-Weather 1115 and Firebane® 1115; Firebane® 1170 and Firebane® 1179; Firebane® 1179 Total Flooding; and N2 Towers Inert Gas Generator Fire Suppression System as acceptable substitutes for fire suppression substances.
