USDA Issues Memo on Labeling of Textile Products with Organic Fibers
On May 20, 2011, the National Organic Program released a policy memorandum to stakeholders and interested parties on the labeling of textiles that contain organic ingredients. According to the memo, any textile product produced in full compliance with the NOP regulations (7 CFR 205) may be labeled as NOP certified organic and can display the U.S. Department of Agriculture organic seal. Additionally, textile products that are produced in accordance with the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) may be sold as organic in the U.S. but may not refer to NOP certification or display the USDA organic seal.

Textile products that are labeled as "organic" may (i) use label claims that identify specific types of organic fibers and (ii) use statements identifying the percentage of organic fibers. These labeling requirements do not supersede requirements of other Federal and State laws and are in addition to those required by the Federal Trade Commission's Textile and Wool Acts.
