Senate Passes Its Version of a Supplemental Appropriations Bill

The Senate passed H.R. 4899, “The Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act”, and has requested a conference with the House. The House version would provide $208 million for 1200 additional SW Border Patrol agents and $136M to maintain current CBP officer staffing levels and add 500 additional officers at SW ports of entry, etc. It also would prohibit funding for certain contracts unless the contractor has certified that it does not engage in certain Iranian transactions.

Senate Urges China, Japan, Korea to Provide Full Access to U.S. Beef

The Senate has agreed to a resolution, S. Res. 544, urging China, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Mexico and Vietnam to follow international guidelines and provide full market access to all U.S. beef products.

Senator Pushes for Fast Approval Imported Catfish Inspection Rule

Senator Lincoln (D) stated during a hearing to consider Elizabeth Hagan as USDA Under Secretary for Food that the department should move quickly to implement the imported catfish inspection rule mandated by the 2008 Farm Bill, as it has been delayed for 18 months.
