U.S. to Host 2011 APEC Meetings

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has issued a press release announcing that in 2011, the U.S. will host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum for the first time in 18 years.

CBP to Organize Meetings, Shape Direction of Customs & Immigration Issues

Hosting will mean that the U.S. will organize various official meetings, informal meetings, bilateral meetings, media events and the 2011 Leaders' Meeting.

In its role at APEC 2011, CBP notes that it will have an opportunity to influence APEC's direction in the areas of customs and immigration.

CBP will also be responsible for meeting preparation and the facilitation of the delegates at the border. CBP states that as it progresses with preparations, it will keep the industry posted.

Four Main APEC Meetings to Take Place in 2011

There will be four main meetings in 2011. These meetings are called Senior Officials' Meetings (SOMs) and approximately 1,000-1,500 delegates will be in attendance at each SOM. The schedule for the SOMs is:

February 27-March 13, 2011 - Washington, DC

May 2011 - TBD

September 2011 - TBD

November 12-20, 2011- Honolulu, HI (Leaders' Meeting1)

(The U.S. will begin hosting duties this December in Honolulu with the Informal Senior Officials' Meeting.)

1The APEC Leaders' Meeting is a global media event that will be the highlight of APEC 2011. The U.S. President, 18 other Heads of Government and representatives from Hong Kong and Taiwan will be in attendance. In total, it is estimated that 20,000 participants will be involved in the APEC Leaders' Meeting.
