CPSC's Current Strategic Plan is Dated, Has Limited Focus
According to CPSC's FY 2010 budget request, CPSC's current Strategic Plan is only the agency's second, dates to September 2003, and focuses mainly on reducing the death rate from fires by 20% and reducing the death rate from consumer product related carbon monoxide poisonings by 20%.
(CPSC stated that a revision to its Strategic Plan has been delayed for several reasons including: the lack of a full quorum of five CPSC Commissioners for extended periods; the lack of a permanent CPSC Chairman; and the enactment of the CPSIA, which brought about substantial changes in CPSC operations.)
CPSC to Revise Strategic Plan in 2010 to Reflect CPSIA, Guide Future Actions
CPSC plans to revise its Strategic Plan in 2010 to consider the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act's (CPSIA) impact, among other things. This revised Strategic Plan will provide an overall guide to the formulation of future agency actions and budget requests, including the FY 2011 budget request which is already being formulated by CPSC staff.
CPSC Seeks Views of Importers and Others on Priorities for FY 2011
The CPSC would like to obtain the views of a wide range of interested persons including consumers; manufacturers, importers, distributors, and retailers of consumer products; members of the academic community; consumer advocates; and health and safety officers of State and local governments on both the potential revisions to its Strategic Plan and its FY 2011 agenda and priorities.
(See ITT's Online Archives or 06/05/09 news, 09060515, for BP summary of CPSC's plans for 2010 which include screening 500 models of children's products for lead, considering the use of labels to show compliance with CPSIA certification, etc.)
