CBP CSMS Messages and Web Postings

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has posted to its Unified Business Resumption Messaging Web site messages providing a port status update in the wake of Hurricane Ike. According to CBP, the Port of Freeport is closed. On September 6, 2008, CBP Commissioner Basham approved an evacuation order for CBP employees and dependents from gulf coast areas impacted by Ike. 2. Updated TRQ/TPL "Threshold to Fill" List

CBP has posted an updated version of its TRQ/TPL "threshold to fill" list, a quick reference to monitor tariff rate quotas and tariff preference levels that are approaching the restraint limit or have filled the in-quota (low duty) rate. The list is divided into two sections - quotas that are at least 85% filled and quotas that are closed. 3. CBP Posts August 2008 Statistics on Bond Rejections

CBP has posted an Excel spreadsheet listing the reject reasons for August 2008 for CBP Form 5106 Importer ID input records, CBP Form 301 Customs bonds, bond riders, bond terminations, etc. The top five reasons, along with the number of rejections for August 2008 were:

CBP, USDA, Coast Guard intercept Asian Gypsy Moths. CBP reports that it has recently worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Coast Guard to intercept several vessels containing Asian Gypsy Moth egg masses and adult dead moths. CBP announces deployment of new primary inspection system at San Ysidro, Otay Mesa. CBP has announced plans for implementation of a new primary inspection computer system at the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa ports of entry beginning in early September. Travelers advised of "port running" dangers, penalties. CBP reports that as part of an effort to raise awareness of increased border security and operations at ports of entry, it is advising travelers of the dangers and penalties of attempting to evade or bypass inspection at the ports of entry. CBP, ICE join forces to fight human trafficking. On September 9, 2008, at a day-long symposium hosted by sister agencies CBP and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, officials spoke out about the importance of ending human trafficking.
