Export Compliance Daily combines U.S. export control news, foreign border import regulation and policy developments into a single daily information service that reliably informs its trade professional readers about important current issues affecting their operations.

The following are highlights of the report's findings (partial list):

Number of identified U.S. exporters/value of identified exports increased. The number of companies that could be linked to export transactions (identified U.S. exporters)1 increased by 2.3% in 2006. In addition, the value of export transactions linked to specific companies (known value) increased by 15%.

Large companies dominated exports. Large identified U.S. exporters (those employing 500 or more workers) were responsible for more than 71% of the known export value, but represented only 3% of all identified exporters. Small-and medium-sized exporters (those employing fewer than 500 workers, including number of employees unknown) comprised over 97% of all identified exporters but accounted for almost 29% of the known export value.

Almost all company types decreased. All company types decreased (except for unclassified companies2) by the following percentages: manufacturers by almost 12%, wholesalers by almost 9%, and "other companies" by 6%.

Most companies exported to only one foreign country. Most identified exporting companies (58%) traded with only one foreign country. A small percentage of companies, 0.4%, shipped to 50 or more countries; these companies accounted for half of the known export value.

Top 5 export destinations unchanged from 2005. The largest number of companies shipped to Canada, followed by Mexico, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan. The order of the top five countries for U.S. exporters did not change from 2005 to 2006.

Top 5 exporting states represented almost 41% of export value. In 2006, the top five exporting states, based on the number of identified exporting companies, were California, Florida, New York, Texas, and Illinois. Exporters in these five states represented almost 41% of the total known export value.

1Census notes that not all export shipments can be linked to specific companies (i.e. exports by individuals, governments, low-value estimates, and documentation filed with missing, unknown, or incomplete company identifiers cannot be linked to companies.)

2Unclassified companies are identified companies for which no North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) classification (manufacturers, wholesalers or other companies) could be assigned.
